May 2007
It all started out as a "Laura you need something to wear to the Pirates 3 premier." OK, well not exactly that, it was more of a "you're going to Pirates 3 in an actual costume this year, likewise you also need a pirate name." So she picked "Molly" which just so happens to be part of a band name that we like, Flogging Molly. Pretty good (irish rock). So she went as "Flogging Molly."
So we brainstormed some ideas, well not really. She agreed to wear *whatever* I made for her, on a condition that I help her with some anime convention costume for this summer (assuming that she actually goes). But I think she sort of agreed on the general idea.
Breakdown: Skirt: It's a black wrap skirt, made from my Brother's Black Cloak (poly something). Orginally, I lined his cloak, but it was realllly heavey, so I took out the lining and it was sitting in my closet since .... march? I don't really remember. Anyway, it's really full & twirly, and is fully functional cause if (read: when) Laura needs mobility in a pirate battle, she can tuck the corners into the waist band, and she has room to fight.
Shift/Shirt: Made from leftovers from Hannah's Caroler Outfit. It's some sort of fuzzy poly fabric. Nothing else that really needs elaborating here, it has underarm gussets (though she doesn't need them - I made the whole thing big - the wonders of sewing at 2 am). First time I sat down and actually made good bias tape of my own, which I used for the neckline. It was pretty sweet. In the beginning I wasn't sure if I was going to have time to make a shirt for her, so in some pics there is a white peasanty shirt with embroidery around it ... from someones closet. Didnt end up using it though.
Bodice: Something I started AGES ago ... if I had started this now, the finished result would look much better, I am sure. Eyelets are hand sewn, all 24 of them (granted, one side is sewn with white thread, and the other is sewn with beige, but yeah). Oh, it's also reversible! The patterned side is the one that should really be worn out, but with the patched over skirt, it was just too much. Seriously, too much. But I still don't think it's that bad, for a crappy lining job. The only boning is a small strip at the front, in front of the eyelets, so the fabric there doesn't pull or gap funny. In some pics, I pulled the skirt out of the way for the eventual pirate fight. I'm thinking that there would be pants worn underneath, but I had none, so I simply put a white skirt underneath the black - good for contrast, and I didnt have anything else to stick under at the moment.
Overskirt/What Is That Ugly Patched Thing?: I had 2 goals in making this, and they both go hand in hand. 1: Not to buy anything, make whole costume from scraps. 2: It's going to be so ugly, it will be good. Explanation: at some point in my life, i want to make a quilt (or something) using scraps of fabric from all different projects. I've already aquired tons of scraps, so I decided that I was going to make a skirt of pieces sewn together. Now the original plan was to make an actual skirt, not like this handkercheif thing thrown together, and it was going to be made of pieces other than squares. But, as time went on, it was too agravating to try and fit all of the pieces together, so the final result is just a bunch of large squares draped around to give the apperance of something ressembling a skirt. So, the pieces are right now attached to a piece of yellow ribbon. It's very flimsy - something that will be fixed in the future, I'd like to have it attached to like actual fabric, the ribbon tangles something terribly, and it's quite frustrating.
Props: I nearly forgot this category! Another part of her name "Flogging Molly" implies a whip or whipping device of some sort. One of my brothers has a bullwhip that we got him when we were visiting cousins & aunt in Texas (long story). While we didn't bring it to the movie theater with us - I forgot to ask them about their weapons policy ;) - but I made her hold the bullwhip when she showed mom the final thing (and so she's holding it in the pics that I haev of her).
Well ... I think I covered all my bases. Oh, I don't *kicks slef many times* have any pics from the midnight showing of Pirates 3. Right now, the only pics I have of my sister in the thing are the ones that i took (she didnt like, evidence of the faces she's making) of her trying it on when she got home from school on the day of pirates. I know she had things to do, so she was in a bit of a rush. Her bodice does close most of the way, so please ignore the obvious gaping & lacing - we were in a bit of a rush - but it was good for the premier. |
